Är dischidia en hoya

As a gardening and landscaping expert, I can confidently say that Dischidia and Hoya are not the same, but they are closely related. These two genera belong to the same family, Apocynaceae, and share many similarities in their appearance and growth habits. However, there are also some distinct differences between them that set them apart.

One of the main differences between Dischidia and Hoya is their level of popularity and recognition among gardening enthusiasts. Hoya plants are quite well-known and have been cultivated for their beautiful and fragrant flowers for many years. On the other hand, Dischidia plants are relatively unknown and have not received as much attention or study as their sister-genus, Hoya. This lack of familiarity with Dischidia means that there is still much to discover and learn about these fascinating plants.

In terms of their physical characteristics, Dischidia and Hoya plants are often confused due to their similar appearance. Both genera have succulent leaves and are epiphytic, meaning they naturally grow on other plants or objects for support. They also have specialized structures called &#;carnivorous leaves&#; or &#;ant houses,&#; which form hol

Hoya and Dischidia are very similar, with really just 1 main difference we will talk about.  They are sister genera, with over  different species between the two in the world. Hoyas are a popular houseplant for their waxy, thick leaves and stunning displays of flowers (when they bloom).  Many varieties of Hoya have incredibly fragrant flowers. Dischidia are not as common in the houseplant world, but are gaining traction and a handful of varieties make an appearance from time to time.  Hoyas and Dischidea are also non toxic to pets and people and have been shown to remove toxins in the air.  These beautiful vining plants often grow as epiphytes (see our Plant Jargon  page to learn more), climbing and twisting through the trees, reaching incredible lengths of 60 feet or more!

While Dischidia have not been studied by scientists and botanists as closely, the main difference between Hoya and Dischidia is that Dischidia typically grow in arboreal ant nests. Most Dischidia have developed a relationship, of sorts, with these ants, modified their leaves and provide protection or storage for these any colonies.  There are two types of leaf

  • Dischidia ovata grows throughout the tropical regions of Asia, including Taiwan, parts of China, New Guinea, India, and other locations. Mainly the species is native to South Asia. Altitudinal range from m to near sea level. They grow as epiphytic vines in träsk forests, open forest, monsoon forest & rain forest.

I first grew Dischidia ovata around , and it may have been my very first Dischidia. inom knew little about it, but really liked the leaves. inom had it potted up in soil, where it did well initially, but succumbed to root rötter after inom had only had it a few months. inom forgot about the plant for a few years but decided in that I needed another one and have successfully kept it ever since. inom have grown it well using two different substrates. It grows quite well for a couple of years in sphagnum moss as most Dischidia do, but after that time the sphagnum begins to break down, and then the moss holds too much vatten, and root rot sets in. inom have funnen that Bonsai Jack&#;s Inorganic Bonsai Substrate with a little bit of vermiculite mixed in to hold a little extra moisture works exceptionally well for growing Dischidia ovata. It does not break down and seems to give the roots room
